The
Musical Island Boys have made world history, as being the first quartet from
outside America to ever gain a medal at the International Convention! The
Musical Island Boys placed 3rd equal in a competition of a very high standard!
We had a fantasatic time in Louisville, Kentucky and we were being stopped
almost everywhere we went! The International Convention was like none other
- it is a trip we will never forget. We felt so welcome to America, and people
were fascinated with our country, age, nationality and sound ... it was awesome!
We sang the NZ National Anthem at the Opening of the Quarter Finals. We were so proud to stand and sing our anthem on the International Stage, and the first thing we saw when we walked out was David Birdling waving out to us, with the NZ Silver Fern Flag. On Thursday July 1st we sang Pokarekare Ana and Te'le ia ole sami at the World Harmony Jamboree held at Kentucky Arts Centre. Then on Friday July 2nd we competed at around 12.30pm Louisville time, with The Darktown Strutters Ball and Bill Bailey Won't You Please Come Home? We were very well received, with a standing ovation at the end of our segment.
We also sang at the Tuesday Night Party, along with International Champion Quartets. At this Party, we got the chance to sing again with the 2002 Visiting quartet, Saturday Evening Post, who we are very excited to say placed 5th in the International Opens. We sang on the evening of our competition at the Chorditorium held in the Galt House Hotel.
Singing
with the Second Edition
Perhaps one of the biggest highlights of our trip, was singing with Jamie
Meyer (Bass), David Harrington (Lead) and Doug Harrington (Bari) or the Second
Edition who were the 1989 International Champions, and who have been a huge
inspiration for us from watching their videos and listening to their CD's.
We met them all seperately, and all by chance. You can visit Doug Harrington's
site at www.dougharrington.com. This was an awesome experience, to sing with
three of the best barbershop quartet singers of all time.
Universal Studios, California Adventure Park and Disneyland!
To finish off our trip, we visited Los Angeles for four days, when we were
able to visit Universal Studios, California Adventure Park and of course,
Disneyland. This was a great way for us to end an amazing trip.
Our
