CONTEST DETAILS
The International Barbershop Convention is held Annually in the USA, and is organised by the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA), or commonly referred to as the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Society itself has International membership of about 32,000 men.
There are three contests as part of the Convention which are the Open Quartet, Open Chorus, and Collegiate Quartet. The Collegiate Contest, known as the MBNA America Collegiate Competition (sponsored by the MBNA Bank, USA) is open to quartets with members under the age of 25. For American quartets to qualify, they must be the highest scoring quartet in their disctrict, or may qualify as a Wild Card quartet. For overseas quartets to qualify (such as Musical Island Boys), they must be the New Zealand High School champions and then submit a video to be judged by the Society. This is how Musical Island Boys got their first invitation in 2004 to Louisville, Kentucky where they placed third equal. Because they medalled in 2004, they were invited to compete again in 2005 however the Musical Island Boys also won the New Zealand Mens' Open last October, so they qualified to the enter the International Mens' Open and the MBNA Collegiate Contest however the rules stated that they could only compete in one event.
The choice was made after much deliberation, to enter again into the Collegiate quartet contest. As the Musical Island Boys' average age is only 18, they are still well under the 25 year old limit to enter. While in America, the boys will also sing at the World Harmony Jamboree (an show featuring all International Competitors), and will also sing the New Zealand National Anthem at the Opening Ceremony, and will perform at the Collegiate Chorditorium on Friday July 8th.
